About Bamboo Furniture
When it comes to choosing home accessories and decor, you may have found yourself contemplating bamboo products: bamboo furnitures, bamboo home accessories and various other pieces of bamboo home decor. When contemplating bamboo in the home, you need to research the material itself before making a final decision. Here’s a little insight into the world of bamboo furnitures.
About Bamboo
By now, most people know that bamboo is a grass and not a wood. Smooth bamboo furnitures are made by cutting down stalks of bamboo and slicing them into thin strips, then gluing the strips together. Rustic or “traditional” bamboo are stocks of bamboo that have been adhered to one another in their natural state. No matter which type of bamboo furnitures you choose, both are relatively durable and resilient.
Bamboo furnitures and home decor are typically available in two different shades: the natural hue or a darker stained hue. The natural hue can vary from species to species, but is typically similar in color to shades such as light pine, ash or maple. Aside from this, bamboo furnitures can also be stained darker shades that range from ebony to warm mahogany and medium walnut.
You may also come across bamboo furnitures that are referred to as carbonized in coloring. Carbonized bamboo is bamboo that has been steamed to create a darker but still natural color that results from the steaming process.
Environmental Impact
The biggest and most attractive part of bamboo furnitures is the impact on the environment. Bamboo is an extremely eco-friendly product. It’s fast growing and can be harvested sooner than woods, thus it is quickly renewable. It also doesn’t require the farmers to plant additional bamboo, as new shoots will reoccur after the previous shoots have been cut down. The process of harvesting bamboo is similar to mowing your lawn. In short: you cut it down, it grows back!
Durability
As noted earlier, there is relatively little difference between the durability between pressed strips of bamboo or bamboo in its natural state. That aside, bamboo in and of itself is an amazingly hard “wood.” In fact, it is more durable than many wood species, including oak.
Cost of Bamboo Furnitures
The misconception is that bamboo isn’t cheap because it’s such a hard wearing, durable material. Fortunately, this isn’t true. The truth is, most bamboo furnitures and other bamboo products including home accessories and decor, will cost you less than those same items made from cherry, maple or even cherry.
With so many attractive features of bamboo furnitures including variation in color, shape and size, it’s easy to see why bamboo has become such a hot commodity. Plus, since bamboo can be manipulated into smooth, seamless furnitures, it can easily be used to create furniture to suit any interior design style: contemporary, traditional, modern, rustic and beyond. Plus, chances are you’ll be able to find your favorite style made from bamboo, thus making it readily accessible and most often, inexpensive when compared to wood furnitures of the same style. With all this, how can you say no to bamboo?
